Snake Veterinary Care in Stockton, CA

OPEN MONDAY – FRIDAY 5:00pm to 9:00PM

Snakes are fascinating, low-maintenance pets that can live for decades with the right care, but finding a veterinarian who truly understands their unique anatomy and health needs isn’t always easy. Unlike dogs and cats, snakes can’t vocalize when they’re uncomfortable, and many health problems develop slowly and silently. By the time most snake owners notice something is off, the condition has often been progressing for weeks or even months.

At Venetian Pet Hospital, we provide veterinary care for snakes and other reptiles in Stockton. Our team has experience with a variety of snake species, and we understand the specialized husbandry, nutrition, and medical needs that keep these animals healthy throughout their long lives.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

Why Snakes Need Veterinary Care

Many snake owners assume that as long as their pet is eating and shedding normally, everything is fine. However, snakes are masters at hiding illness, and routine veterinary exams are the best way to catch problems early. According to Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, most health problems in snakes are a direct result of improper husbandry, including incorrect temperatures, inadequate humidity, and poor nutrition. A veterinarian experienced with reptiles can help identify husbandry issues before they lead to disease and provide treatment when problems do arise.

Wellness Exams for Snakes

We recommend that new snakes receive a veterinary exam within the first week of coming home. This initial visit includes a full physical examination, weight assessment, and fecal testing for intestinal parasites. Annual wellness exams after that help us monitor your snake’s body condition, skin health, and overall status. We also use these visits to review your husbandry setup and make recommendations for temperature, humidity, lighting, and enclosure design.

Common Health Concerns

Respiratory infections are among the most frequently diagnosed conditions in captive snakes. Symptoms may include wheezing, open-mouth breathing, nasal discharge, and reduced appetite. Skin conditions, including retained sheds and scale rot, often develop when humidity levels aren’t properly maintained. Parasitic infections, both internal and external, are also common and can lead to weight loss, anemia, and secondary illness if left untreated.

Husbandry Guidance for Snake Owners

Proper husbandry is the foundation of snake health, and even small mistakes in temperature, humidity, or feeding practices can lead to significant health problems over time. During your snake’s veterinary visits, we review your enclosure setup and offer guidance on several key areas.

  • Temperature gradients: snakes need a warm side and a cool side in their enclosure, typically ranging from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the species, to regulate their body temperature effectively
  • Humidity levels: species-specific humidity requirements prevent respiratory infections and support healthy shedding cycles
  • Feeding practices: we recommend pre-killed or frozen-thawed prey rather than live rodents, which can injure your snake during feeding
  • Substrate and enrichment: appropriate bedding materials and hiding spots reduce stress and support natural behaviors
  • UV lighting: while not all snake species require UVB light, many benefit from it for proper calcium metabolism and overall health

Getting these factors right prevents the majority of health issues we see in captive snakes.

Diagnostic and Treatment Services for Snakes

When your snake is showing signs of illness, we have the diagnostic tools to investigate. Digital X-rays help us evaluate the respiratory tract, skeletal system, and gastrointestinal tract. Bloodwork provides insight into organ function and infection status. Fecal analysis identifies parasitic organisms, and bacterial cultures guide targeted antibiotic therapy for infections.

Treatment for snakes may include injectable or oral medications, fluid therapy for dehydrated animals, wound care for injuries or scale damage, assisted feeding for snakes that have stopped eating, and surgical intervention for egg retention, abscesses, or tumor removal. We tailor every treatment plan to your snake’s species, size, and condition.
