Behind every successful surgery and many important diagnostic procedures is an anesthesia plan tailored to keep your pet safe, comfortable, and pain-free. Anesthesia is one of the most critical components of veterinary medicine, and the skill and care that go into managing it can shape your pet’s entire surgical experience and recovery. Understanding the options available helps you feel more confident when the time comes.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

Types of Anesthesia We Offer

Our hospital provides multiple anesthesia options to match the specific needs of each patient and procedure. The right choice depends on the type of surgery, your pet’s health status, and the level of pain management required.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia creates a state of complete unconsciousness and is used for major surgeries, advanced dental procedures, and certain diagnostic imaging. It involves intravenous induction followed by inhaled gas maintenance, with your pet intubated to ensure a secure airway throughout the procedure.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia numbs a targeted area of the body and is used for minor procedures such as skin mass removals, wound repairs, and biopsies. It is also frequently used alongside general anesthesia as a regional nerve block to enhance pain control and reduce the total amount of general anesthetic needed.

Sedation

For non-invasive procedures, diagnostics, or anxious patients who need help staying calm, sedation offers a lighter level of relaxation. Sedation may be used for radiographs, ultrasound exams, or minor grooming procedures where full anesthesia is unnecessary.

The Role of Patient Monitoring

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, continuous patient monitoring is one of the most important factors in reducing anesthesia-related complications. At our hospital, every anesthetized patient receives dedicated patient monitoring that tracks the following:

  • Heart rate and rhythm: detected via electrocardiogram to catch irregularities immediately
  • Blood pressure: maintained within safe limits to ensure adequate organ perfusion
  • Oxygen saturation: measured through pulse oximetry to confirm proper respiratory function
  • Carbon dioxide levels: tracked with capnography to evaluate ventilation effectiveness
  • Body temperature: monitored and managed with warming devices to prevent hypothermia

These parameters are watched continuously by a trained team member from induction through full recovery.

Pre-Anesthetic Safety Measures

Before any anesthetic event, our veterinarians perform a complete evaluation that includes a physical exam, bloodwork, and a review of your pet’s medical history. Pets with underlying conditions may benefit from additional diagnostics such as cardiology assessment or health screening to ensure we have a thorough understanding of their risks before proceeding.

This careful approach allows us to select the most appropriate medications, dosages, and monitoring levels for your pet, whether they are a young puppy undergoing a neuter or a senior dog facing orthopedic surgery.

“ Dr. Sam saved my baby...

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby
