Ultrasonography in Stockton, CA

OPEN MONDAY – FRIDAY 5:00pm to 9:00PM

When your pet is sick and blood tests alone can’t tell the full story, seeing what’s happening inside the body in real time can change everything. Veterinary ultrasonography gives us a detailed, live view of your pet’s internal organs without surgery, sedation, or radiation, making it one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in modern veterinary medicine.

At Venetian Pet Hospital, we use ultrasound technology to help diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions in dogs, cats, and exotic pets throughout Stockton. Our team is committed to finding answers quickly so we can get your pet on the path to feeling better as soon as possible.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

How Veterinary Ultrasound Works

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of soft tissues and organs inside your pet’s body. A small handheld probe is placed against the skin, and the sound waves bounce off internal structures to produce real-time images on a monitor. Unlike X-rays, which are best for evaluating bones and dense structures, ultrasound excels at showing the size, shape, texture, and movement of soft organs.

According to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, abdominal ultrasound is considered one of the most important non-invasive diagnostic tools available to veterinarians and is routinely used to evaluate organs like the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, and gastrointestinal tract.

Conditions We Diagnose With Ultrasound

Ultrasound helps us investigate a wide range of health concerns, and it’s especially useful when physical exams and lab work raise questions that need further exploration. Some of the most common reasons we recommend ultrasonography include:

  • Abdominal organ evaluation: we assess the liver, kidneys, spleen, adrenal glands, and pancreas for tumors, cysts, inflammation, or structural abnormalities
  • Bladder and urinary tract issues: ultrasound can detect bladder stones, thickened bladder walls, and urinary blockages that cause discomfort and frequent urination
  • Gastrointestinal concerns: when a pet has chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss, ultrasound helps us look for foreign bodies, intestinal thickening, or masses
  • Cardiac assessment: echocardiography evaluates heart structure and function, including valve abnormalities, chamber enlargement, and fluid accumulation
  • Reproductive health: for breeding patients, ultrasound confirms pregnancy, monitors fetal development, and helps plan for safe deliveries

Each of these applications helps us build a clearer picture of your pet’s health so treatment plans are precise and well-informed.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Ultrasound

Most ultrasound examinations are comfortable and stress-free for pets. Your pet typically lies on a cushioned table while a small area of fur is shaved to improve image quality. A warm gel is applied to the skin, and the probe is gently moved across the area being evaluated. The entire process usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on what we’re examining.

Sedation is rarely needed for ultrasound, which makes it a particularly good option for older pets or those with health conditions that make anesthesia risky. In most cases, we can share preliminary findings with you during the appointment and discuss next steps right away. If additional review is needed, we may consult with a veterinary radiologist to ensure the most accurate interpretation.
