Our team uses a combination of laboratory testing, advanced imaging, and hands-on evaluation to diagnose conditions accurately and get your pet the care they need without delay.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

Diagnostic Tools Available at Our Hospital

A review published in the National Institutes of Health describes radiography and ultrasonography as the most commonly used and essential diagnostic techniques in veterinary medicine across all species, including companion animals, exotic pets, and wildlife. At Venetian Pet Hospital, we bring together multiple diagnostic modalities so we can investigate your pet’s health from every angle.

Laboratory Diagnostics

Bloodwork is one of the most informative diagnostic tools available. A complete blood count evaluates red and white blood cells, helping us detect infections, anemia, clotting disorders, and immune system abnormalities. Chemistry panels assess organ function, including the kidneys, liver, and pancreas. We also perform urinalysis, fecal testing, thyroid screening, and specialized tests when a specific condition is suspected.

Diagnostic Imaging

Our imaging capabilities include digital X-rays for evaluating bones, joints, the chest, and the abdomen, as well as ultrasonography for detailed, real-time visualization of internal organs and soft tissues. We also offer tonometry for measuring eye pressure and cardiac imaging for evaluating heart structure and function.

Dermatological Diagnostics

For pets with skin problems, we perform skin cytology, skin scrapings, fungal cultures, and allergy testing to identify the cause behind chronic itching, hair loss, and skin infections. These tools help us develop targeted treatment plans through our dermatology services.

When Diagnostic Testing Is Needed

We may recommend diagnostic testing in a variety of situations. Pets presenting with new symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weight changes, increased thirst, or difficulty breathing often need bloodwork and imaging to identify the underlying cause. Pre-surgical diagnostics help us evaluate your pet’s fitness for anesthesia and plan the safest possible procedure.

Routine diagnostic screening is also a valuable part of preventive care. Annual or semi-annual bloodwork can reveal early-stage kidney disease, liver changes, diabetes, and thyroid imbalances before your pet shows any outward signs of illness. For senior pets, regular diagnostics are especially important because their health can shift quickly and early intervention makes a meaningful difference.

Why In-House Diagnostics Matter

Having diagnostic equipment on-site means we can often run tests and review results during your pet’s visit rather than waiting days for an outside lab. This is particularly important for pets in urgent or emergency situations where time is a critical factor. Our ability to perform X-rays, ultrasounds, and bloodwork all in one location reduces handling and travel stress for your pet and allows our doctors to make treatment decisions quickly.

When cases are complex or require additional review, we can share digital images electronically with veterinary specialists for consultation. This collaborative approach means your pet benefits from both our in-house knowledge and access to outside opinions when needed.

“ Dr. Sam saved my baby...

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby
