Some of the most dangerous health conditions in pets develop quietly, without any visible symptoms until the disease has already progressed. Diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid imbalances, heart conditions, and certain cancers can all be present and advancing while your pet appears perfectly healthy on the outside. Health screening is the single best way to catch these conditions early, when treatment is simplest and most effective.
At Venetian Pet Hospital, we provide comprehensive health screening services for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small mammals in Stockton. Our team uses a combination of physical examination, laboratory testing, and diagnostic imaging to evaluate your pet’s health beneath the surface and identify concerns before they become crises.
Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!
The goal of health screening is to find problems early, ideally before your pet shows any signs of illness. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, preventive health assessments help veterinarians detect diseases at their most treatable stages, which can significantly extend a pet’s lifespan and quality of life.
A one-year gap between veterinary visits can represent five to seven years of aging in your pet’s body. That means a lot can change between annual checkups, especially for middle-aged and senior animals. Regular health screening bridges that gap by providing a snapshot of your pet’s internal health at specific intervals.
Chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism, liver disease, and early-stage diabetes often develop without outward signs. By the time symptoms like increased thirst, weight loss, or lethargy appear, the condition may have been progressing for months. Screening catches these changes in bloodwork and other diagnostics long before clinical symptoms emerge.
We tailor screening recommendations to your pet’s age, species, breed, and risk factors. A typical screening may include a thorough physical examination, complete blood count, comprehensive chemistry panel assessing organ function, urinalysis, thyroid testing for pets over seven years of age, fecal screening for intestinal parasites, and heartworm testing for dogs.
For pets with specific risk factors, we may also recommend digital X-rays to evaluate heart and lung health, hip dysplasia screening for large-breed dogs, tonometry for breeds predisposed to glaucoma, and cardiac evaluation for breeds prone to heart disease. Our goal is to create a screening plan that fits your pet’s individual risk profile rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
We recommend annual health screenings for all adult pets as part of their wellness care. For senior pets, typically those over seven years of age (or five for large and giant breeds), twice-yearly screenings help us stay ahead of age-related changes. Puppies and kittens benefit from baseline bloodwork early in life, which gives us a reference point for comparison as they grow.
Beyond routine scheduling, health screening is also valuable when you’re noticing subtle changes in your pet’s behavior or habits. A pet that’s drinking more water, sleeping more than usual, losing weight despite a normal appetite, or slowing down on walks may benefit from a screening to rule out underlying conditions.
My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby

- Madison G.We believe you should fully understand what your pet’s screening results mean and what they suggest about their health going forward. After each screening, we sit down with you to review the findings, explain any abnormalities, and outline our recommendations. If everything looks normal, those results become a valuable baseline for future comparison. If we find something concerning, we discuss the next steps, whether that’s additional diagnostics, a treatment plan, or simply closer monitoring at your pet’s next visit.
