General Anesthesia in Stockton, CA

OPEN MONDAY – FRIDAY 5:00pm to 9:00PM

Major surgeries, advanced dental cleanings, and certain diagnostic procedures all require your pet to be fully unconscious and pain-free. General anesthesia makes these life-improving and sometimes life-saving treatments possible, but it is natural to feel nervous about putting your pet under. Understanding how the process works and the safety measures in place can help you feel confident that your pet is in good hands.

Venetian Pet Hospital provides general anesthesia services with meticulous attention to safety at our Stockton hospital. Our veterinary team customizes every anesthetic plan to your pet’s specific health profile, age, and the procedure being performed.

Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!

How General Anesthesia Works

General anesthesia creates a controlled state of unconsciousness so your pet feels no pain and remains completely still during a procedure. It typically involves an injectable agent to induce sleep, followed by an inhaled gas anesthetic delivered through a breathing tube to maintain the appropriate depth of anesthesia throughout the surgery.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association, modern veterinary anesthesia protocols have advanced significantly, and the risk of serious complications in healthy patients is very low when proper monitoring and individualized protocols are followed.

Pre-Anesthetic Evaluation

Every pet receiving general anesthesia at our hospital undergoes a thorough evaluation before the day of the procedure.

Physical Exam and Bloodwork

A pre-anesthetic exam assesses your pet’s heart, lungs, body condition, and overall fitness for anesthesia. Bloodwork screens for liver and kidney function, blood cell counts, and other indicators that help us choose the safest medications and dosages. For pets with known conditions or those over a certain age, we may also recommend cardiology screening or radiology for a more complete picture.

Customized Anesthesia Plans

No two patients are the same. A young, healthy dog undergoing a spay has very different anesthetic needs than a senior cat with a heart murmur. We factor in species, breed, weight, age, and medical history to build a plan that minimizes risk and maximizes comfort.

During the Procedure

Once your pet is under anesthesia, our team provides continuous patient monitoring that tracks heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, carbon dioxide levels, body temperature, and anesthetic depth. A dedicated team member is assigned to monitoring at all times, ready to adjust the anesthetic plan instantly if any parameter changes.

We also use local anesthesia techniques as part of a multimodal pain management approach whenever appropriate, which can reduce the total amount of general anesthetic required and support a smoother recovery.

“ Dr. Sam saved my baby...

My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby

Recovery and Aftercare

After the procedure, your pet is moved to a warm, quiet recovery area where our team continues to monitor vital signs until they are fully awake and stable. Most pets are groggy for a few hours after waking and may need a calm, comfortable space at home to rest for the remainder of the day.

We send every patient home with clear aftercare instructions and are always available to answer questions during the recovery period. Depending on the procedure, a follow-up visit may be scheduled to check healing and remove sutures.
