Finding a vet who actually knows ferrets is harder than most people expect. Ferrets are prone to a specific set of serious conditions — adrenal disease, insulinoma, lymphoma, and heart disease — that a general practice may not be equipped to diagnose or manage. Without a vet who understands ferret biology, problems can go undetected until they become emergencies.
Venetian Pet Hospital provides dedicated exotic pet veterinary care in Stockton, CA, including comprehensive ferret services for patients of all ages. From annual wellness exams and vaccinations to spay/neuter procedures and diagnostics, our family-owned practice is built to give ferrets the level of care they deserve.
Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!
Ferrets are predisposed to a specific set of serious health conditions, many of which develop gradually as they age. Annual wellness exams allow us to monitor your ferret’s weight, dental health, heart function, and lymph nodes and catch problems before they become emergencies. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, hormonal disorders such as adrenal gland disease and insulinoma are among the most common conditions affecting ferrets over age three — and early diagnosis through bloodwork and physical examination significantly improves outcomes.
Adrenal gland disease develops when the adrenal gland overproduces sex hormones. Symptoms include hair loss, itchy skin, a swollen vulva in females, and difficulty urinating in males. We screen for adrenal disease at every annual visit and can confirm a diagnosis through bloodwork and ultrasound.
Insulinoma is a pancreatic tumor that causes the body to produce excess insulin, resulting in dangerously low blood sugar. Affected ferrets may appear weak, drool, paw at their mouths, or experience seizures. Management includes dietary changes, medication, and in some cases soft tissue surgery.
Spay and neuter procedures are strongly recommended for ferrets, and in females they are often medically necessary. Unspayed female ferrets can develop a life-threatening condition called aplastic anemia if they remain in heat without breeding. Neutering males reduces hormone-driven aggression and lowers the risk of adrenal disease. We perform ferret spay and neuter procedures at our Stockton location with full anesthetic monitoring and pre-surgical bloodwork.
Staying informed about your ferret’s health risks helps you recognize warning signs at home. Some of the issues we commonly see include:
Our health screening and medical services include the diagnostics needed to evaluate these conditions thoroughly.
Ferrets require annual distemper and rabies vaccinations — these are not optional. Distemper is nearly always fatal in ferrets, and rabies vaccination is required by law in California. We administer ferret-safe vaccine formulations at every annual visit and maintain records so nothing falls through the cracks. Beyond vaccinations, ferrets are obligate carnivores that need a diet high in animal protein and fat. We provide nutritional counseling at every wellness visit and can help you sort through the conflicting guidance that exists around raw versus commercial ferret diets.
Ferrets need a vet who understands their species-specific risks and can provide consistent preventive care. Key veterinary needs for ferrets include:
| Care Area | Details |
|---|---|
| Distemper and rabies vaccines | Required annually — distemper is fatal in ferrets |
| Adrenal disease screening | Extremely common in ferrets over age 3 |
| Insulinoma screening | Fasting glucose test recommended for ferrets over age 3 |
| Spay and neuter | Medically recommended — unspayed females risk life-threatening aplastic anemia |
| Dental cleanings | Ferrets are prone to tartar buildup and tooth fractures |
| Annual wellness exam | Bloodwork, weight, physical assessment, and husbandry review |
Ferrets should see a vet at least once a year and twice yearly after age 3. If your ferret shows any sudden behavioral changes or physical symptoms, our urgent care service is available Monday through Friday evenings.
