Hearing the word cancer in connection with your pet can feel overwhelming, but a diagnosis does not have to mean the end of happy, comfortable days together. Veterinary oncology has advanced tremendously, and many pets respond well to treatment while maintaining a quality of life that surprises their families. Understanding the options available is the first step toward making informed decisions for your companion.
Venetian Pet Hospital provides chemotherapy and cancer treatment for pets in Stockton as part of our commitment to comprehensive veterinary care. Our veterinary team works closely with each family to build a treatment plan that prioritizes both effectiveness and your pet’s comfort.
Our dedicated team is here to provide urgent, high-quality care for your pets—because they’re family and deserve immediate attention when it matters most!
Cancer can affect dogs and cats at any age, though it becomes more common as pets get older. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, which is one reason routine wellness exams and health screenings are so valuable.
When a suspicious lump, unexplained weight loss, or other concerning symptom is identified, our team uses a combination of diagnostics to determine whether cancer is present and how far it may have progressed. These tools include fine needle aspirates, biopsies, radiology, ultrasonography, and comprehensive bloodwork. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs over the age of 10 and is a significant health concern in cats as well, making early screening and prompt evaluation essential.
Our team manages a range of cancers including lymphoma, mast cell tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, and other solid and hematologic malignancies. Each type of cancer behaves differently, and our approach is tailored to the specific diagnosis, stage, and your pet’s overall health.
Cancer treatment in pets is not one-size-fits-all. We develop individualized plans that may include one or more of the following approaches.
Veterinary chemotherapy uses medications to target and slow the growth of cancer cells. Unlike in human medicine, the goal in veterinary oncology is typically to manage the disease while preserving quality of life rather than pursuing aggressive cure-at-all-costs protocols. Most pets tolerate chemotherapy well, with fewer and milder side effects than many owners expect.
For tumors that can be removed, soft tissue surgery or cryosurgery may be recommended either as a primary treatment or in combination with chemotherapy. Dr. Sam Varon has a particular interest in oncology and is experienced in surgical approaches to cancer management.
For cases where a cure is not realistic, our focus shifts to keeping your pet comfortable for as long as possible. Pain management, nutritional support, and regular check-ins help maintain quality of life. Dr. Varon also has experience in end-of-life care, ensuring that families receive compassionate guidance through difficult decisions.
My dog Aurora had mouth cancer. I found out and had such little time to schedule her surgery because it was so aggressive. I was referred to Dr. Sam by a friend. I live in Santa Barbara and made the trip up to Sacramento. I am still impressed how well everything went! She had to have almost half of her jaw removed. She is cancer free and looking amazing! Back to her puppy self. First picture is only 2 months after surgery! 2nd and 3rd are the day of. Dr. Sam saved my baby
