How Often Should Pets See the Veterinarian?
Most healthy adult dogs and cats should have a wellness exam once a year. Senior pets, puppies, kittens, and pets with ongoing medical needs may benefit from more frequent visits because their health can change quickly.
Birds, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other pocket pets also need routine veterinary care. Many exotic pets hide illness until a condition is more advanced, so regular exams give us a chance to review weight, diet, habitat, behavior, and subtle changes you may have noticed at home.
Our veterinarian will recommend an exam schedule based on your pet’s species, age, lifestyle, medical history, and risk factors.
What Happens During Your Pet’s Wellness Exam?
A wellness exam starts with a full physical evaluation and a conversation about your pet’s daily life. We’ll ask about appetite, energy, bathroom habits, behavior, diet, medications, travel, lifestyle, and anything that has changed since your pet’s last visit.
Our veterinarian will examine your pet’s eyes, ears, mouth, skin, coat, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, weight, and body condition. For cats and dogs, this may also include vaccine planning, parasite prevention, dental recommendations, bloodwork, or screening tests based on age and risk.
For birds, reptiles, and pocket pets, we may also discuss enclosure setup, temperature, lighting, humidity, diet, handling, and species-specific signs of illness. These details matter because many exotic pet health problems begin with small changes in nutrition or environment.
