What is Spay & Neuter?

Spay and neuter are procedures performed by your veterinarian while your pet is under general anesthesia, so they do not feel pain. Your pet may feel some discomfort following the surgery, but your veterinarian will generally prescribe medication to ease the pain and discomfort.

  • Neutering is a surgical procedure in which the male’s sexual organs (testes) are removed. The result is a reduced level of testosterone, therefore preventing reproduction.
  • Spaying is a surgical procedure in which the sexual organs of a female animal are removed (ovaries), which prevent s the female from becoming pregnant.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

There is a wide range of benefits that come with spaying and neutering pets, including:

  • Spaying female pets eliminates or significantly reduces the risk of dangerous uterine infections and breast cancer. Neutering male pets significantly reduces the risk of your pet getting testicular cancer and prostate problems.
  • There is less urge to mate, so your pet will be less distracted, more easily trained and be more content. The decreased need to mate also helps to decrease the risk of pet becoming lost or being injured while roaming.
  • There are no heat cycles in females to deal with
  • Spaying and neutering generally reduces your pet’s need to mark their territory
  • Aggression is generally significantly reduced, especially in neutered males

When Should Pets be Spayed or Neutered?

The traditional age for neutering or spaying dogs is when they are between the ages of six to nine months; however, puppies as young as eight weeks can be neutered or spayed as long as they are in good health. Adult dogs can be neutered or spayed as well; however, older dogs sometimes have a slightly high risk of post-operative complications. It is typically safe for kittens as young as eight weeks to be neutered or spayed. It is recommended that the procedure be scheduled before your cat reaches five months of age and it is possible to have your female cat spayed while she is in heat.
