Pet Surgery with Your Stockton Veterinarian

Pet Surgery

Dogs and cats need surgery for a wide variety of reasons, from preventative care to emergency surgery after an accident. At the Venetian Pet Hospital, our caring and experienced staff are dedicated to giving your pet the best surgical care, no matter what the cause. It can be frightening to think of your furry family member undergoing a surgical procedure, but it can be comforting to know that the best professional team will care for your animal and provide the healing it needs.

Pet Surgeon Talks About Common Pet Surgeries

Pets need to undergo surgery for many different reasons, from minor problems to life-threatening accidents. Some of the most common reasons pets come to our pet surgeon are:

  • Repair of the ACL, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament
  • Spaying and neutering
  • Tooth extractions and other dental procedures
  • Benign skin masses
  • Bite wounds from fights with other animals
  • Bladder stones
  • Hip dysplasia, a joint disorder most commonly seen in dogs
  • Internal surgery, often to remove swallowed foreign objects
  • Cataract surgery

The Importance of Anesthesia

Every pet that's going to undergo a surgical procedure in our hospital will be treated with anesthesia to calm and relax them. Anesthetizing pets is for their safety, to make sure they don't move during the procedure as well as preventing them from feeling pain while the surgery is happening. Surgery can be a frightening experience for cats and dogs, which can make procedures even more painful as stress causes muscles to stiffen.

Depending on the procedure, we'll use an injected chemical or an inhalant to relax your pet. During the procedure, our team will monitor its vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate to make sure all is well.

Post-Surgical Considerations

Depending on the procedure and the age of your pet, it might take a few days before the full effects of the anesthesia have worn off. It might act as if it doesn't recognize familiar things or people, so it's important that you keep younger children away from your pet for the first week.

Your pet's body won't be able to regulate heat as well as normal, so it's important to keep most pets in a warm place to recover. Dogs that are bred for colder climates, such as Newfoundlands and huskies, may do better in a cooler environment.

Our veterinarian may prescribe pain medication, antibiotics, or other pills, and we'll send instructions for making sure your pet takes them.
